PHP extension missing in CloudPanel? Check, enable ionCube and fix errors

An installer or plugin says something like "The ionCube Loader needs to be installed", "Imagick not found" or "Call to undefined function ...". Before you install anything, check: CloudPanel already ships most common PHP extensions, and a "missing" extension is often just the wrong PHP version or a disabled one.

Step 1: Which PHP version does the site use?
Each site has its own PHP version (site > Settings > PHP Version). CloudPanel can run several versions side by side, each with its own settings. See How to change PHP version and PHP settings in CloudPanel.

Step 2: Check what's loaded for that version
As root, replace 8.3 with your site's version:
Code:
php8.3 -m | sort php8.3 -m | grep -iE 'imagick|redis|intl|gd|zip|ioncube|soap|bcmath'
This shows the command-line PHP. The website uses PHP-FPM, which has its own ini files. To see exactly what the website sees, create a test file in the site folder:
Code:
<?php phpinfo();
Open it in the browser, search the page for the extension (Ctrl+F), then delete the file. Never leave phpinfo pages online.

Step 3: Enable ionCube Loader
CloudPanel ships ionCube for its PHP versions but leaves it disabled for performance. Turn it on for the version you need (example: 8.3), in both the CLI and FPM php.ini:
Code:
grep -n 'ioncube' /etc/php/8.3/cli/php.ini /etc/php/8.3/fpm/php.ini
You'll see a line like
Code:
;zend_extension=ioncube_loader_lin_8.3.so
. Remove the leading semicolon in both files:
Code:
nano /etc/php/8.3/cli/php.ini nano /etc/php/8.3/fpm/php.ini
Then restart PHP-FPM for that version and check:
Code:
systemctl restart php8.3-fpm php8.3 -v
The version output should now mention "with the ionCube PHP Loader". If the grep finds no ionCube line, that PHP version may not have a loader yet (ionCube often supports new PHP releases a little later). Use the newest version ionCube supports for that app.

Step 4: An extension really isn't there
Common extensions such as imagick, redis, intl, gd, zip, soap and bcmath are normally already included. If one is truly missing:
  • Check that the app really needs that PHP version. Switching the site to a version that has the extension is often the simplest fix.
  • Search the CloudPanel docs and forum for the extension name before adding packages from other repositories. Mixing PHP packages from different sources is the fastest way to break PHP on a server.
  • After any change, restart the matching
    Code:
    phpX.Y-fpm
service and check again with phpinfo.

Step 5: Errors after enabling something
If the site shows 502 after a change, PHP-FPM probably failed to start because of a typo in php.ini. Check:
Code:
systemctl status php8.3-fpm --no-pager | tail -20 php-fpm8.3 -t
Undo your last change, restart, and the site is back. See Fix 502 Bad Gateway in CloudPanel.

Applies to CloudPanel v2 on Ubuntu and Debian, October 2026. Replace 8.3 with your site's PHP version.
