Quick answer
To change a website from PHP 8.3 to PHP 8.5 in aaPanel Free Edition, install PHP 8.5 from App Store, open Website → your site's settings → PHP version, select PHP-85, and click Switch. Test the website immediately and keep PHP 8.3 installed for rollback.
Before you switch
1. Install PHP 8.5
Open App Store and search for PHP. Find the official PHP-8.5 entry, click Install and choose an installation method offered by your panel. Our lab used Quick install. Wait for the task to finish and confirm the entry shows Setting rather than Install. Open its settings and confirm PHP-FPM is running.
If PHP 8.5 is missing, update the app list and check official aaPanel availability for your system. Do not select a different version and assume it is 8.5.
2. Check extensions and configuration
Open PHP-8.5 → Setting. Check the extensions your application requires, such as mysqli or pdo_mysql for database access, mbstring, curl, GD, ZIP and intl. Install only missing required extensions that are available for PHP 8.5. Compare memory_limit, upload_max_filesize, post_max_size and timezone with your previous settings. Do not copy the entire old php.ini blindly.
3. Change the website's PHP version

4. Verify the website's actual PHP runtime
The panel selection is one check; also verify a PHP request through your website. Create a temporary file in the website document root with a unique name, for example af-php-version-check.php:
Open https://your-domain.example/af-php-version-check.php and confirm it reports 8.5.x. Delete this file after checking. Avoid leaving a public phpinfo() page online.
Test the homepage, login, admin area, database operations, forms, uploads and any application-specific tasks. Review PHP and website error logs for fatal errors or missing extensions. A static homepage loading successfully does not prove the application works.
5. Check scheduled tasks and command-line PHP
Changing a website's PHP version does not necessarily change the default command-line PHP or existing scheduled tasks. If a task must run on 8.5, check its interpreter path. In our aaPanel lab the PHP 8.5 binary is:
Update application cron or worker commands deliberately after testing compatibility. Keep other websites and tasks on their required versions.
Rollback if the website breaks
Go back to Website → the same site → PHP version, choose PHP-83, and click Switch. This requires keeping PHP 8.3 installed. Test again and investigate the PHP error log. If the application or database was also changed, switching PHP back alone may not undo those changes; use the appropriate backup or application rollback.

What we verified
On 10 October 2026, our Ubuntu 22.04 lab running aaPanel Free Edition 8.0.6 installed PHP 8.5.11 from the official catalog. We switched the lab website from its existing PHP 8.4 configuration to PHP 8.5 and verified an HTTPS PHP request reported 8.5.11. mysqli, pdo_mysql, mbstring, curl, GD and ZIP were loaded. The temporary test file was removed.
This confirms the panel switching procedure and target runtime. It does not claim that an existing PHP 8.3 application was migrated or that every application is compatible with PHP 8.5.

Before you switch
- Back up website files and export the database. Keep a copy off the VPS and make sure you know how to restore it.
- Check that your CMS, framework, themes, plugins and dependencies support PHP 8.5. Test a staging copy first for a live website.
- Record the site's current PHP 8.3 settings and required extensions. Each aaPanel PHP version has its own configuration; installing 8.5 does not copy all 8.3 settings.
- Review changes in both PHP 8.4 and PHP 8.5, because this upgrade crosses two minor versions.
1. Install PHP 8.5
Open App Store and search for PHP. Find the official PHP-8.5 entry, click Install and choose an installation method offered by your panel. Our lab used Quick install. 3. Change the website's PHP version
- Open Website → PHP Project.
- Find your domain. Click its current PHP version shortcut, or open the site's settings and select PHP version.
- Confirm this is the intended domain and that its current version is PHP-83.
- Choose PHP-85 from the dropdown.
- Click Switch and wait for the success message.

Changing a website's PHP version does not necessarily change the default command-line PHP or existing scheduled tasks. If a task must run on 8.5, check its interpreter path. In our aaPanel lab the PHP 8.5 binary is:

If the application or database was also changed, switching PHP back alone may not undo those changes; use the appropriate backup or application rollback.
Common problems
- PHP-85 is not in the dropdown: confirm the official installation completed, then reopen the site settings.
- 502 Bad Gateway: check that PHP 8.5's FPM service is running and inspect PHP-FPM/Nginx logs.
- Database driver or function missing: verify the required extension is loaded under 8.5, not just under 8.3.
- Fatal errors after upgrading: check application compatibility and dependencies; roll back while you fix them.
- Terminal still shows an older version: check the explicit interpreter path; website PHP and CLI PHP can differ.
