CloudPanel installation failed? Common install errors and how to fix them
CloudPanel installs with one command, and most of the time it just works. When it doesn't, the installer usually stops with a short message and leaves you guessing. This guide covers the errors people hit most, what they mean and how to get a clean install.
Before anything else: use the current install command
CloudPanel's install command contains a checksum (a long code) that matches the installer version. The checksum changes when CloudPanel releases a new installer, so always copy the full command from the official CloudPanel installation page instead of an old blog post. It looks like this (the checksum here is an example):
And always update the system first:
Error 1: "install.sh: FAILED" / "computed checksum did NOT match"
The installer you downloaded doesn't match the checksum in your command. Either your command is old, or the download was cut off. Delete the file () and run the current command from the docs again. Never remove the checksum check to "make it work"; it protects you from a tampered installer.
Error 2: unsupported operating system
CloudPanel only installs on the Ubuntu and Debian versions listed on its requirements page (recent LTS releases such as Ubuntu 24.04 and Debian 12). CentOS, AlmaLinux, Rocky, Ubuntu 20.04 and other systems won't work. Check yours:
If the OS is wrong, reinstall the VPS with a supported image from your provider's panel. Both x86_64 and ARM (aarch64) servers are supported. See CloudPanel system requirements.
Error 3: "Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock-frontend"
Another package job is running, usually the automatic security updates that start right after a new VPS boots. Wait a few minutes and check:
When nothing is listed, run the installer again. Don't delete the lock files while a job is still running; that can break the package database.
Error 4: the server isn't empty
CloudPanel needs a fresh, empty server. If Apache, Nginx, MySQL, another control panel or an earlier half-finished CloudPanel install is already there, the installer can fail or leave a broken setup. Check what is running on the web and database ports:
If anything shows up, the cleanest fix is to reinstall the VPS with a clean OS image and run the CloudPanel installer first, before you add anything else.
Error 5: the install is killed halfway or the server freezes
Usually not enough memory. Installing the database server is the heaviest step. Check your RAM and swap:
On a small VPS (1 GB), add a 2 GB swap file before installing:
Also check free disk space with . Leave plenty of room for the database and your sites.
Error 6: downloads fail (DNS or network)
Messages like "Could not resolve host" or timeouts mean the server can't reach the internet properly. Test:
If names don't resolve, check or set your provider's DNS servers. If you run the installer as a normal user, use or log in as root.
Right after a successful install
Open immediately and create the admin user. Until you do, anyone who finds the page could create it. Your browser will warn about a self-signed certificate on first visit; that's expected. Can't reach the page? See Can't log in to CloudPanel in this section.
Still stuck? Post the last 20 lines of the installer output, your OS () and in this section.
