What is HestiaCP?

HestiaCP (Hestia Control Panel) is a free, open-source hosting panel licensed under GPLv3. It started as a fork of VestaCP and is now actively maintained, while VestaCP itself has been largely abandoned. If you still run VestaCP, Hestia is the natural place to move to.

Main features
  • Web: Nginx, optionally with Apache behind it, and multiple PHP-FPM versions per site.
  • Mail: Exim and Dovecot, with webmail, SPF/DKIM support and spam filtering.
  • DNS: BIND, so the server can host your zones (and act as a DNS cluster).
  • Free SSL with Let's Encrypt for sites, mail and the panel.
  • Users and packages for hosting clients, plus backups and a file manager.
  • A full command-line toolkit: every panel action has a matching v-* command.

Good to know
  • Default panel port is 8083: https://your-server:8083
  • Supported on Debian and Ubuntu. Install on a clean server.
  • Templates for Nginx and PHP-FPM live in /usr/local/hestia/data/templates/ and can be customised per site.

HestiaCP is a solid choice if you want a lightweight, open-source panel with mail and DNS included and a strong CLI.

HestiaCP: Features and Frequently Asked Questions
Official documentation checked 7 October 2026. This supplements the introduction above.

What is HestiaCP?
Hestia Control Panel is free, open-source server management software released under GPLv3. It gives you a browser interface for common hosting tasks and offers command-line/API tools for automation. You supply the server and remain responsible for its maintenance.

Which features does it provide?
The official feature list includes web domains and application installation, per-domain certificates, databases, mail services, DNS management and backups. It also describes user resource controls, SSH/SFTP keys, chroot options and admin two-factor authentication. DNS tools include DNSSEC and cluster support.

Some services are installation choices. Decide whether you actually need local mail and authoritative DNS before selecting the stack. A smaller installation may reduce the number of services you must maintain, but it still needs careful access control and updates.

What are the minimum system requirements?
The current getting-started guide specifies:
  • 1 CPU core, 64-bit.
  • 1 GB RAM when SpamAssassin and ClamAV are excluded.
  • 10 GB disk.
  • AMD64/x86_64 or ARM64/aarch64.
  • Debian 12 or 13, or Ubuntu 22.04, 24.04 or 26.04 LTS.
The recommended baseline is 4 CPU cores, 4 GB RAM and 40 GB SSD. Hestia explicitly does not support non-LTS Ubuntu releases. Recheck the documentation for your intended release and provider image before buying a VPS.

The smallest supported installation is not a capacity guarantee. Mail scanning, database growth, PHP workers and backups can need substantially more resources. Estimate storage from real data plus retention, and monitor the workload after launch.

Who is HestiaCP for?
It is worth evaluating for administrators who want an open-source panel for conventional website hosting and may also want mail and DNS on their own infrastructure. It can be useful for personal projects or small hosting operations with someone capable of maintaining the server.

If your application depends on containers, unusual runtimes or complex deployment pipelines, check how those fit before committing. Do not assume every modern application can be deployed through a one-click installer.

Should I create websites under the admin account?
Hestia's best-practice guide recommends creating a regular user before adding web or mail domains. Keep server administration separate from ordinary hosting activity and enable two-factor authentication for the admin account. Review user permissions with a test account rather than judging them only from the administrator view.

Can I install it on an existing production server?
The project requires a fresh operating system installation. Use a separate clean server for a migration. Inventory websites, databases, mailbox data, DNS records and cron tasks, then test recovery before changing live traffic. Do not force installation over another panel or rely on a snapshot as your only copy of important data.

Which is the best VPS hosting Control Panel?
There is no single winner for every workload. Evaluate Hestia against your requirements for mail, DNS, applications, permissions, maintenance and support. On staging, create a site, issue a certificate, test user access and restore a backup. Choose the panel you can operate reliably after the initial setup.
